“Poured out for the last time: $146M in beans, no profit, all heart.”
“Launched with the 360, retired with dignity — thanks for every theme, demo, and Arcade download.”
The Xbox Games Store began life as Xbox Live Marketplace, launching alongside the Xbox 360 on November 22, 2005 with 400 pieces of content. It was where a generation of players bought Xbox LIVE Arcade games, full titles, add-ons, demos, gamer pictures, and Dashboard themes. It was rebranded as Xbox Games Store on August 30, 2013, ahead of the Xbox One's arrival.
Microsoft announced on August 17, 2023 that the Xbox 360 storefront would close, and it shut down on July 29, 2024. Its decline had been gradual: video content was superseded by Xbox Music and Xbox Video by late 2012, and the Microsoft Store took over as the standard storefront on October 22, 2017. After nineteen years, it simply handed over the keys.
