“Poured out for the last time: $146M in beans, no profit, all heart.”
“Checkmated at last — folded gracefully into a bigger board, never into oblivion.”
Founded in 2014 by German grandmaster Jan Gustafsson and Enrique Guzman, chess24 was an internet chess server available in English and ten other languages. Fans loved it for its live coverage of major international tournaments, plus its own online events — including the Magnus Carlsen Invitational. It was a place where the chess world gathered to watch, play, and talk.
In 2019, chess24 merged with Magnus Carlsen's Play Magnus AS, and in 2022 Chess.com purchased Play Magnus, becoming chess24's owner. In December 2023 the team announced they would be closing the site and apps by the end of January 2024. On January 31, 2024, chess24 shut down, its address now redirecting to Chess.com's news and events pages.
