Flappy Bird
“He made a bird we couldn't stop tapping, then took it away to save us from ourselves.”
“Live Tiles, dead platform — but the Metro look never left our hearts.”
Windows Phone arrived in October 2010 as Microsoft's successor to Windows Mobile and Zune, sporting a fresh interface built on the Metro design language and aimed at consumers rather than the enterprise crowd. It was bold, clean, and unlike anything else on the market. Fans loved it for standing apart in a sea of sameness.
Windows Phone 8 arrived in 2012 on a new Windows NT kernel — a change that left every Windows Phone 7 device behind, though apps carried on. The 8.1 update brought Cortana and cross-platform Windows Runtime apps, and in 2015 the line was folded into Windows 10 Mobile as Microsoft unified phone and PC. The OS officially bowed out on July 17, 2014, but its design DNA echoes on.
