“A modest revision that became a beloved classic — now folding its screens for good.”
“The shop closed its doors, but the theme song never left our heads.”
Launched on November 19, 2006, the Wii Shop Channel was the Wii's digital storefront, where users bought Channels including exclusive WiiWare games and classics from earlier console generations under the Virtual Console banner. It was beloved enough that even its theme music became a hit, spreading across the internet as a widely used and well-received meme.
Most of the channel's functions were discontinued on January 30, 2019, and it was never accessible on the Wii Mini at all. Its successor, the Nintendo eShop, carried on the work on the Wii U, where the Wii Shop Channel lived on through Wii Mode, still offering WiiWare downloads and legacy Virtual Console titles unavailable elsewhere. Whatever happened to the store, the music endured.
