Tab Clear

1992 — 1994 · The Coca-Cola Company
retired Reported · 1994

“It was clear, it was cola, it was caffeine. It was 1993 in a bottle.”

Tab Clear was Coca-Cola's variation on its beloved Tab, and its entry into the short-lived clear cola movement of the early 1990s. Unlike most clear soft drinks, it actually contained caffeine and, according to the company, tasted like cola. Introduced in the United States on December 14, 1992, it got off to initially positive results and soon rolled out to Britain, Japan, and Australia over the following months.

Despite the promising start, Tab Clear was discontinued in 1994 after only a short time on shelves. It came and went with the entire clear cola fad, a curious moment when transparency seemed like a selling point. What remains is the memory of a soda that somehow managed to be clear, caffeinated, and genuinely cola all at once.
