“Power pack outside, dignity intact — a graceful exit in 1983.”
“Named for a lion, drank like a lemon; the savanna was gentler than the sales chart.”
Simba was Coca-Cola's sugar-sweetened, lemon-flavored citrus drink, its name meaning lion in Swahili. Heavily researched and test marketed in 1968, it went national in 1969 with all the confidence a lion's name implies. It was pitched, simply, as a thirst-quencher.
But the roar never quite matched the mane: after sales did not reach expectations, Coca-Cola withdrew Simba in 1972. The lion slept after barely three years in the wild. What remains is a lesson in how even the most heavily researched big cat can still lose the hunt.
