“Built brick by brick, and by kids: a corner of the internet that played nice.”
“Nine LEDs, 5.7 inches of OLED, and a million living rooms turned into rabbit holes”
The PlayStation VR, released in October 2016, was Sony's virtual reality headset for the PlayStation 4 — forward compatible with the PlayStation 5, no small kindness for a peripheral. It packed a 5.7-inch 1080p OLED panel, 3D audio processed through its little processor box, and nine positional LEDs that let the PlayStation Camera track your head through 360 degrees. People loved it because it made VR a couch-adjacen
Sony moved on with the PlayStation VR2 in 2023, and the original headset was discontinued in 2024, closing out an eight-year run. It bowed out with at least 5 million units sold worldwide — a proper send-off for the headset that brought VR home. It leaves behind a shelf of memories and a successor with some very large goggles to fill.
