“It fit a console in your pocket, and for a while, that was enough to change everything.”

The PlayStation Portable arrived in Japan on December 12, 2004, as the first handheld installment in the PlayStation line, and it was the most powerful portable console of its time. In an era when challengers like Nokia's N-Gage and Sega's Game Gear had failed to dent Nintendo's handheld dominance, the PSP finally made the competition real. Fans loved it for its advanced graphics and its wealth of multimedia features

Sony announced its retirement in June 2016, closing out a run that had spanned the seventh console generation, where it first faced the Nintendo DS and later even the Xbox 360. It went out not as a failure but as a pioneer, the device that proved a viable rival to Nintendo's handhelds was possible. What it left behind was a generation of players who carried a full PlayStation experience wherever they went.
