Sold each fall season from 2016 to 2023 in ever-changing packaging, it was a genuinely beloved dare — celebrities and social media personalities took the plunge, and the recipe evolved annually with peppers like Trinidad Moruga scorpions, Sichu
In September 2023, after 14-year-old Harris Wolobah of Worcester, Massachusetts died hours after taking the challenge, Paqui immediately withdrew and discontinued the chips, halted all publicity, and recalled the product from stores. The packaging was eventually declared sold out, and criticism of the challenge's health effects had already been mounting. It exits as the rare internet dare that got a formal retirement
