“Twenty nuggets short of forever, purple at heart.”
“It taught the world JavaScript one small hop at a time. Certificate pending, forever.”
Grasshopper was Google's 2017 app for learning to code in JavaScript, built around small, bite-size lessons on iOS and Android. It was the rare educational app people actually finished: the program got gradually harder, and completing it earned you a certificate of completion — no assessments required, just your own steady progress. For many, it was the friendliest possible first step into programming.
In March 2023, Google announced Grasshopper would shut down on June 15, 2023. There were no dramatics, just a quiet end to a quiet success. For everyone who got their start hopping through those lessons, the certificate still counts — even if Google has stopped issuing them.
