Angry Birds Rio
“The birds flew home to Rio, and honestly, who could blame them.”
“It untethered VR from our PCs, then quietly untethered itself from us.”
The Oculus Go, released on May 1, 2018, was Facebook Technologies' first standalone VR headset — an all-in-one device that needed no PC, no phone, no cables, just a face and a little curiosity. Built with Qualcomm and Xiaomi, it packed a Snapdragon 821, a 5.5-inch LCD, and Fresnel lenses that improved on the Rift's. For many people it was the first time virtual reality felt simple instead of a rig-building project.
It was unveiled at the Oculus Connect developer conference on October 11, 2017, and even got a Chinese sibling in Xiaomi's Mi VR Standalone in May 2018. On June 23, 2020, after just two years of service, the Go was discontinued. It left behind a category it helped create — standalone VR headsets — which was brand new when the Go first arrived.
