Macintosh IIvi
“Brief of tenure, big of heart: the only II to moonlight as a Performa.”
“The last of its family, and it carried a CD-ROM drive to the grave.”
The Macintosh IIvx arrived in October 1992 as a personal computer from Apple Computer, and it turned out to be the final member of the Macintosh II family. It launched alongside the slower Macintosh IIvi, sharing the same metal case design as the Performa 600 and Performa 600CD. For those who wanted one, it could be equipped with an internal double-speed CD-ROM drive, a genuinely nice trick at the time.
The IIvx was sold from October 1992 until October 1993, when it was discontinued. As the last of the II line, its passing closed out an entire family of Macintosh computers. The case design lived on in spirit through its Performa 600 siblings, which shared the same metal body.
