LaserWriter

???? — 1997
retired Reported · 1997

“It put a print shop on every desk and politely retired once the job was done.”

The LaserWriter was Apple's laser printer with a built-in PostScript interpreter, one of the first laser printers ordinary people could actually buy. Paired with WYSIWYG publishing software like PageMaker on the Macintosh, it helped kick off the desktop publishing revolution. Suddenly anyone with a Mac and a dream could set type like a pro.

Apple offered the LaserWriter from 1985 to 1988, and the line itself was finally discontinued in 1997. By then, its work was complete: desktop publishing was no longer a revolution, just a fact of life. The LaserWriter didn't die so much as retire, hands folded, revolution won.
