Google Hangouts was a cross-platform instant messaging service that began as a feature of Google+ in 2011 before standing on its own in 2013, absorbing features from Google+ Messenger and Google Talk along the way. Google even folded in Voice features, declaring Hangouts the future of its internet telephony ambitions. For a while, it really was where the conversation happened.
But the future is a moving target: in 2017 Google began building Meet and Chat for Workspace, and starting in June 2020 it transitioned Workspace users, then Gmail users through 2021, onto the new pair. On November 1, 2022, Hangouts was discontinued. Its spirit lives on, split in two, in the tools that replaced it.
