AOL Hometown
“Every eight seconds, a new homepage. We never did learn HTML, and didn't need to.”
“It let you edit your friends' pages, and no social network has trusted us since.”
Yahoo Mash was a social networking service from Yahoo with a twist: pages were built from modules — photos, common friends, and more — that users or their contacts could add. Better yet, unless you disabled it, your friends could edit your page directly. It was part profile, part communal art project.
The experiment ended on September 28, 2008, when Yahoo pulled the plug. Mash lasted only a brief moment, but it left behind the memory of a network that trusted us with each other's pages — a kindness, or a dare, we haven't seen since.

“Free, legal, and lovable - just never profitable. The hardest chorus to sing.”
“It played the losing side's movies beautifully, and never once complained about it.”
