“Your homepage, your rules — the web tidied up, and somehow felt less like home.”
“Beautifully flat, ahead of its time, and stranded by its own family.”
Windows Phone 7 launched worldwide on October 21, 2010 as a complete overhaul of Microsoft's mobile Windows efforts, successor to Windows Mobile 6.5 and built on the Windows CE 6.0 R3 kernel. Its flat, Metro interface was distinct and unmistakable — a phone that looked like nothing else in your pocket. The trade-off for that fresh start was a clean break: it couldn't run Windows Mobile 6 applications.
The end came fast. Windows Phone 8 arrived on October 29, 2012 on an incompatible foundation, so no Windows Phone 7.x hardware could make the jump. As a compromise, Microsoft released Windows Phone 7.8 on January 31, 2013 with a few backported touches, but support for Windows Phone 7 ended January 8, 2013, and for 7.5 and 7.8 on October 14, 2014.
