Chevrolet Camaro (fifth generation)
“Back from the dead for five glorious years, then off to make room for the next one.”
“Five names, one job: it kept your dashboard humming while the road went by.”
Windows Embedded Automotive was Microsoft's operating system for car computers, part of the Windows Embedded family and built on Windows CE. Born out of the Microsoft Automotive Business Unit formed in 1995, it first shipped as the AutoPC on December 4, 1998. Under its many names it quietly powered features drivers actually touched every day, including Ford Sync, Kia Connect, and Fiat's Blue&Me.
The platform went by many names over the years — Microsoft Auto, Windows Automotive, Windows CE for Automotive, Windows Mobile for Automotive — a chameleon that kept working under whatever badge it wore. In 2021 Microsoft retired it for good. It leaves behind a generation of dashboards that spoke Windows, whether drivers knew it or not.
