Urchin (software)

???? — Mar 2012 · Google Inc.
retired Confirmed · Mar 2012

“It read the logs so you didnt have to — the quiet ancestor of every analytics dashboard.”

Urchin was a web statistics analysis program from Urchin Software Corporation that pored over web server log files and turned them into readable traffic reports. It could work as a pure log file analyzer, or in hybrid mode combining page tags with log data to erase the blind spots of each method alone, yielding more accurate visitor data. Its scalability and pricing model made it a favorite among ISPs and web hosting

Google acquired Urchin Software Corp. in April 2005, and the acquisition formed the basis of Google Analytics. Under Google the product kept evolving — Urchin 6 in 2008, Urchin 6.5 with AdWords integration in 2009, and Urchin 7 in 2010 with 64-bit support and a new UI. Sales of Urchin products ended on March 28, 2012, leaving behind a very famous descendant and a lot of empty log files.
