“It fed us the internet one feed at a time, until Google decided we were full.”
“Raunchy, rude, and gloriously unapologetic — gone but still stuck in your head.”
The Romp was a Los Angeles-based entertainment website that specialized in original flash animation videos and games, launching in April 2000. Founded by Bruce Forman and Eric Eisner — son of then-Disney CEO Michael Eisner — it was known for raunchy, politically incorrect content. Its target audience was males aged 16 to 25, described by Eisner as people who watch South Park, listen to Howard Stern and read Maxim.
The site ran for five years before closing in 2005. It left behind a memory of a rowdier internet age, when crude flash animations and games were the height of online entertainment. For its fans, The Romp captured exactly the irreverent, R-rated spirit they couldn't find anywhere else.
