“It streamed while others shuffled; rest easy, home of all things Perry.”
“It made moving pictures from mere words, then moved on.”
Sora was OpenAI's text-to-video model, turning prompts into short clips and even extending existing ones. People got their first glimpse in February 2024, and it arrived for ChatGPT Plus and Pro users in the US and Canada in December 2024. With Sora 2 in late September 2025, it became a social app too — video generation with a feed attached.
The app was shut down on April 26, 2026, and the API followed on September 24, 2026, marking the end of the Sora AI brand entirely. It left behind a legacy of moving watermarks that third parties learned to strip within a week, and a controversial habit of borrowing copyrighted material unless rights holders opted out. A model that could conjure video from words couldn't conjure a way to stay alive.
