“The wasteland finally reclaimed its own — engine cold, radio off, dust settled.”
“Free voicemail with your name on it — gone quiet, but the tone still echoes.”
PrivatePhone was a free voicemail service from NetZero, launched June 1, 2006, giving users their own voicemail number at no cost. Early on it capped the main inbox at 10 messages and greeted callers with 'Please leave a message for this Privatephone.com subscriber after the tone.' It was a small, unglamorous luxury: a phone identity of your very own, for free.
The greeting was eventually shortened to a simple 'Please leave a message after the tone,' and the service itself went quiet not long after, ending on February 19, 2008. For a little under two years, it let people screen the world on their own terms. Somewhere, an inbox of ten messages is still holding them.
