Playdia

1994 — 1996 · Bandai
retired Reported · 1996

“The quiz-master of the living room, gone quietly after two short years of gentle fun.”

The Playdia was Bandai's fifth-generation console, launched in Japan in 1994 at ¥24,800 under the codename BA-X. It wasn't built for hardcore gamers — it was a multimedia home entertainment system for a young audience, full of anime quiz software and edutainment titles. Its single infrared joypad with simple controls made it welcoming to kids and families who found other consoles intimidating.

The Playdia retired in 1996 after just two years, its ambitions overtaken by the era it belonged to. Almost everything published for it came from Bandai itself, with VAP's Ie Naki Ko - Suzu no Sentaku the lone outside contribution. It left behind a small, gentle library — a reminder that not every console needed to fight for the crown to be loved.
