“Your homepage, your rules — the web tidied up, and somehow felt less like home.”
“It cropped, it styled, it resized — then it went to live on a cloud farm upstate called Google+.”
Picnik was an online photo editor from Downtown Seattle that let anyone crop, resize, and add style to images right in the browser. It pulled photos in natively from Facebook, Myspace, Flickr, Picasa, and more, kept its basic tools free for everyone, and even lived inside Flickr as the default editor. Loved and easy, it felt like the friendly photo booth of the early social web.
Google acquired Picnik on March 1, 2010, and in January 2012 announced it would close on April 19, 2013, moving its tools to Google+. Gracefully, it refunded all Premium members and gave everyone free Premium until the final day. Some fans petitioned to save it, but the lights went out as promised — politely, to the very end.
