“A sweet little OS that kept your battery alive longer than most of us keep New Years resolutions.”
“Comfortable, easy to set up, gone before its successor could take the strap off.”
The Oculus Rift S was a virtual reality headset co-developed by Lenovo and Oculus VR, announced in March 2019 and released that May as the successor to the original Rift CV1. It traded external sensors for an inside-out tracking system with cameras built into the headset, and added a higher-resolution display and a new halo head strap. Fans appreciated that it just worked: easier setup, more comfort, no tower of base
The reception was fond but honest, with critics calling it an incremental upgrade and noting regressions like a lower refresh rate and no hardware adjustment for IPD. It was discontinued in April 2021, quietly stepping aside after barely two years. What it left behind was a generation of players who got into PC VR through that halo strap.
