MS-DOS, the Microsoft Disk Operating System, was the main operating system for IBM PC compatibles throughout the 1980s, running on x86 machines and sometimes shipped under IBM's PC DOS branding. For a generation of computer users, it simply was the personal computer — a command line and a promise that the machine would do what you asked.
IBM licensed and released it in 1981 as PC DOS 1.0, but the Microsoft and IBM versions diverged in 1993, and competitors like DR-DOS emerged from 1988 onward. From there, graphical Microsoft Windows gradually superseded it, and by 2006 the old command line was quietly retired. Windows inherited the throne, but everyone who ever typed C:\ knows who built the kingdom.
