“It kept the hot side hot and the cool side cool, right up until the world went warm on styrofoam.”
The McDLT was a McDonald's hamburger built on a charmingly fussy premise: keep the hot side hot and the cool side cool, with hot and cold components separated until you assembled the sandwich yourself. Its marketing leaned fully into that ritual, and the slogan became the thing everyone remembered.
In early 1991, McDonald's discontinued the sandwich, citing complaints about its bulky polystyrene packaging — a culprit both in logistical headaches for restaurant kitchens and in rising environmental concerns. Later accounts have described the McDLT as a failed product, though the failure had less to do with the burger than with the box it came in.
