“It played your VHS tapes like they were games. Honestly, it tried.”
“It buried its treasure, and the map was never quite the same.”
Lego Pirates launched in 1989 with pirates, Napoleonic soldiers, Pacific Islanders, sailing ships, and buried treasure, drawing on the late Golden Age of Piracy. Fans loved the chance to build whole seafaring worlds at minifigure scale, and the theme spread across Lego System (ages 6-12), Duplo, and the 4+ lines.
The theme has since been discontinued, though it was seen across the Lego System, Duplo, and 4+ themes. It leaves behind the memory of brigantines on dining room floors and treasure chests with very little treasure in them.
