“The last of the ring/silent switch, and the first to say goodbye to Lightning.”
The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus arrived on September 12, 2023, unveiled at the Apple Event in Cupertino as part of the seventeenth generation of iPhones. They made history as the first iPhones to swap the Lightning port for USB-C, a change Apple embraced in compliance with European Union mandates. Fans also got to keep a beloved relic: the Ring/Silent switch, which this line would turn out to carry one last time.
The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus were retired on September 9, 2025, closing out a number of small eras at once. They were the final iPhones with 6 GB of RAM, the diagonal rear camera layout, and that faithful little mute switch, all features their successors left behind. A transitional device in the best sense — it bridged old habits and new ports, then gracefully stepped aside.
