Launched on January 25, 2005, Google Video began as a free service for searching TV program transcripts before evolving into a full video host, letting people upload clips to Google's servers and embed them across the web, much like YouTube. For a while, it was Google's own answer to the video boom — free, familiar, and wearing a trusted name.
Then Google bought YouTube, and the writing was on the wall: new uploads stopped in 2009, and the service shut down for good on August 20, 2012. Today video.google.com quietly redirects to a video search engine, a tidy ghost of the place that held the internet's home movies first.
