“A sweet little OS that kept your battery alive longer than most of us keep New Years resolutions.”
“It took classrooms to the ends of the earth on a cardboard box and a phone.”
Google Expeditions was a virtual reality platform built for schools, letting students strap a phone into Google Cardboard or Daydream View and take virtual field trips anywhere. Launched in 2015, it teamed up with heavyweights like the American Museum of Natural History, National Geographic, WWF, and the National Museum of Korea. For a few glorious years, a class trip didn't require a bus.
On June 30, 2021, Expeditions was discontinued and merged into Google Arts & Culture. Its spirit lives on there, but the little app that made field trips possible from a desk chair will be missed. Rest well, tiny passport.
