“It split your screen, tamed your notifications, and never asked for thanks”
“It dreamed big, but the rest of us never quite put our phones in it.”
Daydream was Google's virtual reality platform, announced at Google I/O in May 2016 and launched with the Daydream View headset on November 10, 2016. The idea was charmingly simple: slot your Android phone into the back of a headset, and view compatible apps through its lenses. As Google's second swing at VR after Cardboard, it was built right into Android itself, adding enhanced features like controller support.
Alas, Daydream never found a wide audience among consumers or developers. In October 2019, Google announced that the Daydream View headset had been discontinued and that no new devices would be certified for the platform. It leaves behind the memory of a time when VR felt one cardboard cut and one phone slot away from the mainstream.
