“Half grapefruit, half lime, all Midwest — gone in one piece after a century and a half.”
“A pie with ambition: even McDonald's couldn't keep New Zealand from loving it.”
Georgie Pie was New Zealand's homegrown fast food chain, owned by Progressive Enterprises, that specialised in meat pies and dared to dream of standing alongside McDonald's, Pizza Hut and Burger King. The first restaurant opened in 1977, and at its peak there were 32 restaurants across the country. The pies came in traditional flavours like mince and cheese and steak and kidney, plus international takes like Chinese,
After financial difficulties, the chain was bought by McDonald's in 1996, mostly for its restaurant locations, and the last store closed in 1998. But fans kept calling for its return, and in 2013 McDonald's brought the pies back through its restaurants. The revival lasted until 2020, when Georgie Pie was discontinued for good.
