Georgie Pie
“A pie with ambition: even McDonald's couldn't keep New Zealand from loving it.”
“Half grapefruit, half lime, all Midwest — gone in one piece after a century and a half.”
50/50 — also known as Canfield's 50/50 and Graf's 50/50 — was a grapefruit- and lime-flavored soft drink born in Milwaukee in the 1870s, when John Graf first brewed it alongside Grandpa Graf's root beer. It became a fixture of the Midwest, beloved in southern Wisconsin and Chicagoland, and stood as one of the Canfield company's most popular flavors.
The drink outlived its maker many times over: the Graf family sold up in 1968, and 50/50 passed through P & V Atlas, Canada Dry, A.J. Canfield, Select Beverages, Cadbury Schweppes, Dr Pepper Snapple, and finally Keurig Dr Pepper before its quiet end in 2020. Whatever else changed over 150 years, the Midwest always knew exactly what it was tasting. Few soft drinks can claim a longer goodbye.
