“It told a generation they were the coolest kid in school. Rest easy, flame emoji.”

Gas was an anonymous social media app launched in August 2022 by Nikita Bier, Isaiah Turner, and former Facebook engineer Dave Schatz, aimed squarely at high schoolers. Users answered pre-written compliments in anonymous polls — like "I think (blank) is the coolest kid in school" or "would make an ugly face and still look pretty" — and winners received a "flame." The name came from Gen Z slang for "gassing someone up

Gas was largely built on tbh, Bier's earlier high school app acquired by Facebook in October 2017, only to be dissolved in 2018 due to low usage. History, it seems, had a script it liked. Discord quietly retired Gas in 2023, less than a year and a half after it first appeared, leaving behind a short, bright run of flames and the memory of an app whose only sin was being too nice.
