“It once ran the whole fun part of the internet, and it never asked for a flashlight”
“It gave Community a sixth season — that alone earns a kind farewell.”
Yahoo! Screen began life in 2006 and relaunched under that name in 2011, a video portal that bet big on originals like Burning Love, Electric City, Ghost Ghirls, and Other Space. It even stepped in to rescue Community for another season after NBC let it go — a move fans still appreciate. Uploads eventually gave way to curated on-demand content hosted by Yahoo's own properties.
In January 2016, after a $42 million write-down on its original content, Yahoo! Screen was shut down. That August, Yahoo partnered with Hulu to move its free video library into a successor, Yahoo! View, which streamed recent episodes from ABC, NBC, and Fox in the United States. The name kept changing — Video, Screen, View — but the curtain finally came down on June 30, 2019.
