ReBirth RB-338 was a software synthesizer from Propellerhead that first surfaced as a public alpha for Mac OS in October 1996, running on Windows, Mac OS 8-9, and later as an iOS app for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. It made dance-oriented computer music composition something you could do right at your desk. For a generation of bedroom producers, it was the machine that got ideas out of their heads.
Propellerhead stopped developing the original program in January 1999, and officially discontinued desktop support in September 2005. But this was a graceful goodbye: shortly after support ended, they launched the ReBirth Museum and released the final desktop version, 2.0.1, as a free download and torrent. The company moved on to Reason and app versions of ReBirth, keeping its spirit very much alive.
