“Pin your memories to the map; the layer lives on in our hearts”

Panoramio was a geo-located photo sharing site launched in 2005 that let people tag photos to places on the map. Uploaded photos appeared as a layer in Google Earth and Google Maps, so anyone exploring an area could see it through the eyes of people who had actually been there. Google acquired it in 2007, and by 2009 it was among the 1000 most popular websites in the world.

The site closed on November 4, 2016, though the Google Earth layer remained available until January 2018. Its headquarters, once housed in Google's Zurich office, had by then moved to Mountain View, California. Image source URLs are still available, so a few pinned memories remain within reach.
