“Free online play, no fuss — it just connected, and then quietly stepped aside.”
Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection gave DS and Wii owners free online multiplayer built straight into their games, alongside the Wii Shop Channel and DSi Shop. Nintendo made a point of simplicity: in Mario Kart DS, you could go from main menu to racing strangers worldwide in seconds. No patches, no accounts to wrestle — just pick a menu option and start searching for players.
In January 2012 the service was succeeded by the Nintendo Network, which unified the 3DS and Wii U and traded Friend Codes for a proper online community, plus paid downloadable content. On April 30, 2012, the WFC era officially closed. It left behind the memory of online play that asked almost nothing of the player — rare then, rarer now.
