Napster was a proprietary peer-to-peer file sharing application, launched in June 1999 by Shawn Fanning and Sean Parker, that became synonymous with sharing MP3s across the internet. For a brief, glorious stretch, it let anyone with a connection treat the world's record collections as their own.
The lawsuits came for it, and Napster was shut down in July 2001, filing for bankruptcy in June 2002. Its name proved more durable than its business: sold to Roxio, then Best Buy, then Rhapsody — which renamed itself Napster in 2016 — before passing on to Web3 hands and, in 2026, a relaunch as an AI tool. The original is gone; the ghost still answers to its name.
