“Clippy's golden age: when a spreadsheet could run on Windows 95 and nobody complained.”
Released to manufacturing on March 29, 1999 and hitting retail that June, Office 2000 was version 9.0 of the suite that defined getting work done on Windows. It was the last Office to run on Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0 SP3 through SP5, making it the final bridge between the old computing world and the new. For a generation of workers, this was simply what documents looked like.
Microsoft tended to it lovingly with a Service Release and three service packs across its long life, but all good things end. Support officially closed on July 14, 2009, ten years after launch. Its Mac cousin, Office 2001, had already carried the torch across the pond since 2000.
