“Be kind, rewind — the whole world did, and then the world moved on”
“Signed out one last time — away message: gone but not forgotten.”
Meebo, founded in September 2005 by Sandy Jen, Seth Sternberg, and Elaine Wherry in Mountain View, California, was a web-based instant messenger that later stretched into online chat and social networking. For people juggling buddies across networks, it meant never having to download a thing — your whole social life lived in a browser tab.
In June 2012, Google acquired Meebo and folded its staff into the Google+ development team, and the service was discontinued on June 6, 2013. Its people went on to build other things at Google, but the little messenger that fit in a browser tab signed off for good.
