Macintosh Quadra 950

???? — Oct 1995 · Apple Inc.
retired Confirmed · Oct 1995

“Six slots, one stout tower, and the last laugh over the fast young Quadras”

Launched in March 1992, the Quadra 950 was the big, boxy flagship of Apple's 68040 era, nudging its clock rate up to 33 MHz over the Quadra 900 it replaced while keeping everything else — including the price — the same. People loved it for the same reason it looked a bit old-fashioned: that mid-tower case held six full slots and room to grow, making it the machine you kept for years. Buy the right bundle and it even

By 1993 the sleeker, cheaper Quadra 800 and 840AV had outpaced it on speed, thanks to interleaved RAM, faster SCSI and — in the 840AV's case — a 40 MHz chip. But those mini-towers had less room to expand, so the 950 soldiered on in the server market and ended up outliving both of its supposed successors, which were themselves replaced within a year. It was finally retired in October 1995, and with a Processor Upgrade
