EMac
“Built for classrooms, shaped like a friendly toaster, gone but never graded down”
“White plastic, big heart: the people's Mac went home smiling.”
Introduced in May 2006 as part of Apple's switch from PowerPC to Intel, the MacBook replaced the iBook as the friendly, affordable face of the Mac lineup. Sitting below the Air and the Pro, it won over consumers and classrooms alike. It became the best-selling Mac in Apple's history, and for five months in 2008 it was the best-selling laptop of any brand in US retail stores.
Over its life it wore three designs — polycarbonate and fiberglass, then unibody aluminum, then a return to white polycarbonate. On July 20, 2011, Apple discontinued it for consumer purchase, effectively superseded by the MacBook Air's lower entry price. It left as it lived: modest, beloved, and outselling everyone.
