Mac OS X Jaguar, version 10.2, was the third major release of Apple's desktop and server operating system, arriving on August 23, 2002. It won fans over with a family pack that let five computers in one household share the upgrade, a gesture that said the whole home mattered. It also made history as the first Mac OS X release to publicly embrace its code name in marketing and advertisements.
Jaguar superseded Mac OS X 10.1 and was, in turn, succeeded by Mac OS X Panther, passing the torch along the big cat lineage. Its retirement came the natural way, as part of Apple's steady march forward rather than a sudden severing. It left behind the tradition it started: operating systems proudly named and marketed as the cats they were.
