“Dubbed, loved, and eventually absorbed by its own successor — rest easy, senpai.”
“The smallest iPod, the first to go flash, and the last to let go.”
The iPod Shuffle was the smallest member of Apple's iPod family and the first to embrace flash memory, announced at Macworld on January 11, 2005. It asked nothing of you: no screen, no menus, just your music in shuffle mode and a device light enough to forget you were wearing it. That simplicity was the whole point, and fans loved it for exactly that.
The fourth- and final-generation model arrived on September 1, 2010, and held the line for seven years until Apple discontinued the Shuffle on July 27, 2017. No dramatic end, just a quiet retirement after a long, good run. Somewhere out there, gym shorts still have a pocket that never got filled again.
